Flying the Piper PA-19

PA-19

Monday, 18th of January 2021, 13:40Z, I take place in this wonderful Piper PA-19 for a few touch and go and a local flight in the Arcachon bay. Sky clear and light wind, the weather conditions are perfect to enjoy both this legendary aircraft and the amazing view of that place, the Bassin d’Arcachon.

The PA-19 is a civilian version of the L-18C, military version delivered for the French Army Light Aviation (ALAT). It is almost the same as the PA-18 Super Cub with a major difference, it doesn’t have flaps.

After the crash of 1929, William Thomas Piper is looking to build a simple and economical aircraft. Associated with the Taylor brothers, they will design The Taylor E-2. From that initial version will follow many of them. After the purchase of the Taylor Aircraft Company, the Piper J-3 Cub is created in 1937, probably the most famous because of a huge commercial success.

In total, all combined versions (civilian and military), it will be more than 50000 aircrafts built.

Almost 100 years later, we still fly this aircraft everywhere in the world and it is the cheapest aircraft in the fleet of my flying club.
